Wool Island sheep rug hand felted from raw fleece by Felt Indie
This hand felted rug is made of fine and very soft natural coloured wool. The wool has a beautiful rich grey colour. The approximately staple length is 15 cm which is very long. The size of the rug is about 1.7 x 1.4 m.
Each ‘Wool Island’ is made of the fleece from a natural coloured sheep. These rugs are an eco & animal friendly, leather free alternative to the traditional sheepskin rug.
I source much of the wool direct from small farms in NSW, where most of the sheep are known by name. Sheep are only shorn once a year and no two fleeces will ever be the same, even those from the same sheep will differ year by year. Coming straight from the sheep’s back, these pure coats are rich in lanolin and still strewn with remnants of hay, grass and vegetation.
All of Felt Indie’s pieces are created naturally and patiently, using only my hands, water and olive oil soap. This technique is known as wet felting, a grounding and heavy work which is incredibly satisfying for me. When I see the fleece’s new form slowly emerging, I always feel blessed to have found this medium for self-expression.
